In the Astigmatism Eye Exercises you hold a piece of written text (Large and Small Print for example) in your periphery while you read a different set of text in front of you (like the 10 foot chart). You then periodically stop reading the chart, rapidly glance at the text in your periphery, then quickly look back at the front chart and continue to read.

Astigmatism Eye Exercises Step-By-Step

Eye Exercise 1 – Reading

  1. William Fuller shifting eye exercise with chartsRemove any corrective lenses i.e glasses and contact lenses.
  2. Whilst reading a paragraph on a page of text or an eye chart, flash an object directly in front of your eyes for a split second. The object you flash can be a page with letters just like the Large and Small Print or a deck of cards. For example, you could be reading an the 10 Foot Eye Chart, “E, N, D . . .” and then glance to recognize the Queen of Spades as you flash this card in front of your eyes.
  3. Quickly look back at the text and continue to read.
  4. Repeat this sequence for 5 minutes unless your eyes feel fatigued.
  5. Palm for 5 deep breaths.
  6. If your eyes feel strong enough continue the eye exercise after the palming.

BONUS Eye Exercise – Horizontal Obstruction

  1. Remove any corrective lenses i.e glasses and contact lenses.
  2. Place the large piece of paper horizontally between the eyes, as though you were performing the Peripheral Vision Eye Exercise.Peripheral Eye Exercise Richard Miller
  3. Looking forward flash your fingers to either side of the head.
  4. Without turning the head try to look directly at either one of the fingers, acknowledge how many fingers you are holding up and then look forward again.
  5. Repeat this sequence for 5 minutes unless your eyes feel fatigued.
  6. Palm for 5 deep breaths
  7. If your eyes feel strong enough continue the eye exercise after the palming.
