Neck Massage

The purpose of neck massage is to loosen the muscles of the neck so that we can bring more blood to the head. Good blood flow to the head not only helps our vision; it also nourishes our control centre, the brain, helping us to function better in our everyday lives.

  1. Rotate the head 10 times in each direction. Whilst doing this try to feel for tight areas, range and quality of motion.
  2. Choose a side you wish to start with.
  3. With the thumb and forefinger pinch and hold for one deep breath the top of the sternocleidomastoid, which is the large muscle running up the side of the neck behind the ear.
  4. Then move down the muscle and repeat until you reach the bottom.
  5. Now walk back up the muscle with your middle and forefinger, applying pressure on the way up.
  6. Repeat 5 times.
  7. Lean your head to the left so that your left ear is trying to touch your left shoulder.
  8. Hold for 5 deep breaths.
  9. Now with both hands tap on the right side of your neck, all the way up and down.
  10. Continue tapping for 5 deep breaths.
  11. Stop tapping and try to touch your right ear to your right shoulder and hold for 5 deep breaths.
  12. Now with both hands tap on the left side of the neck and continue for 5 deep breaths.
  13. Tuck your chin to your chest and with the fingertips tap up and down on the muscles in the back of the neck. If you decide to tap on the vertebrae make sure its very light.
  14. Lift the head back up to a neutral position and tap all over the sides and back of the neck, varying speed and pressure.
  15. Now rotate the head 10 times in each direction, feeling if the neck feels any looser, lighter or has better movement.
  16. Finally, repeat any of the previous techniques that felt particularly good for you.
